Question:
Answer:

No, strictly speaking we can live without EPA and DHA, because the body as the ability to create these fatty acids itself from plant Omega-3.

However, supplying these fatty acids directly through the diet does seem to be more optimal for the health of the eyes, the brain and the immune system. This means that we achieve a higher level of EPA and DHA in the tissue, which seems to be more optimal.

We do not have a separate recommendation when it comes to EPA and DHA in Norway, but internationally there are several. ISSFAL (International Society for the Study of Fatty Acids and Lipids) recommends an intake of 500 mg of EPA and DHA on a daily basis to protect against cardiovascular disease1.

The health benefits of plant-derived Omega-3 are documented to a much lesser extent than marine Omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA).
